Daily Sketch World Cup Souvenirs
The World Cup Souvenir Cards were created to recognize both ‘England World Cup candidates’ and ‘international stars of world renown’. These cards were obtained by cutting out coupons found in the Daily Sketch newspaper. To acquire a set of cards, one needed to collect five coupons and then send them to the newspaper, which would in return send back five cards arranged as a strip. The first set of coupons was published in the newspaper dated February 23, 1970.
Later on, the Daily Sketch issued a ‘Stop Press’ announcement, informing readers that they could now obtain the complete set of 40 World Cup Colour Cards in three weeks instead of seven. To achieve this, readers had to send in twelve coupons for the remaining 35 cards. The collection of coupons for the additional cards began on Monday, March 2nd.
These cards were intended to be individually cut out from their strip of five and affixed into the Mexico 1970 World Cup Souvenir Album, which was priced at 1/3 at the time. Consequently, some cards are found in strips on the market, while most are found individually.
