Tower Press
In the 1930s, Tower Press began producing cardboard goods. During the war, the two founders of the company’s games division met while interned on the Isle of Man, both having German family roots. Over the years, Tower Press became best known for its extensive range of jigsaw puzzles, as well as a variety of charming children’s games produced from the early 1950s onwards.
However, in the mid-1960s, Tower Press unexpectedly ventured into football memorabilia, producing a series of football player transfers. Given their primary focus on jigsaw puzzles, it remains something of a mystery why they decided to explore this market—but we’re certainly glad they did, as these transfers are particularly striking.
In 1969, Waddingtons acquired Tower Press, likely as a strategic move to eliminate a competitor, particularly in the jigsaw puzzle market. Waddingtons itself eventually ceased to exist, making Tower Press’ football transfers and other memorabilia even more intriguing and collectible today.
1966/67

Famous Football Clubs
A very attractive set of reverse transfers from around 1966. Two sheets of 24 (Series 1 and 2) were produced (‘Made in England’) by T.P.
Roger Pashby has done some excellent detective work from the galleries to confirm the date as likely to be 1966/67. Here is Roger’s logic, using webpages from the outstanding Historical Football Kits website:
1. Huddersfield Town (Series 2) are wearing the blue shirt, dating it to 1966/67, 1967/68 or 1968/69.
2. The socks from Hull City (Series 2) confirm the date as between 1965 and 1968.
3. Ipswich Town (Series 1) played in their blue shorts in 1965/66 and 1966/67, though HFK shows 1966/67 as white socks.
4. Plymouth Argyle (Series 1) played in their full green strip from 1966 to 1968.
